Starting July 15, the intersection of 105 St and 102 Ave will be closed to traffic. Pedestrian access will generally be maintained on at least one side of each street.
Phase #2 (Replacing TDN #179): 102 Ave (Road and Intersections) will continue to be closed between 102 St and 103 St. On July 15, the 104 St / 102 Ave intersection will open and the 105 St intersection will close (See TDN#711). Additional changes to the 106 St / 102 Ave intersection are forthcoming but will be addressed in a new TDN once confirmed. The 103 St and 106 St bike facilities at 102 Ave will be detoured through the site, sometimes requiring a dismount and walk condition. Alberta mode is the news read back to you by a machine doing an impression of a guy from here. The facts underneath are the same ones as the plain edition — every number, name, date and phone number is checked against the source both ways, and a restyle that moves one is thrown out and rewritten. What changes is the voice, and the voice is not polite.
It swears. Properly, not asterisked. It is rude about council, the roads, the weather, the Oilers and this whole city, and it will be rude about a bad day — a crash, a fire, a death — because that is how people here actually talk about those, and going quiet about them was the last version's mistake. It is never rude about the people in the story.
It is meant to be funny and it is meant to be a bit much. Some of it will sit wrong anyway. When it does, that is on us and we would rather hear it than not: corrections@edmontondailybrief.ca, and we will pull the line.
Two things never get the voice, and they are not negotiable: anyone charged or before a court, who has a trial coming and is entitled to have us stay out of it, and a suicide. Those run word for word as the plain edition wrote them.
It reaches fewer stories than you might expect. Most items read the same in both editions — the note at the top says how many changed today. Turning this on does not rewrite the paper.
