Ottawa provides $51.2M for 199-unit Mill Woods housing project

The federal government is providing $51.2 million for the 199-unit Gilbertson Block at 210 Lakewood Road East in Mill Woods. Many of the units will be affordable housing, according to Quebec MP Caroline Desrochers. The six-storey building is being developed by the Rohit Group and Covenant Health as part of the Covenant Wellness Community. The project is expected to be ready in late 2027 and will receive an additional $5.1 million from the developers.

ASIRT investigates fatal Edmonton police shooting at hotel

ASIRT is investigating after two Edmonton police officers shot and killed a 57-year-old man at a west Edmonton hotel Monday night. Police had responded to a report that two men were inside a hotel room and one had a firearm. The man exited and re-entered the suite several times before advancing toward officers with scissors. No officers or other emergency personnel were injured, and EPS said it could not provide more information while ASIRT investigates.

Edmonton adds $1M for parking enforcement as complaints rise

The increase created “a persistent backlog of unresolved complaints,” according to a city report. Abandoned vehicles were the city’s most common parking complaint for the third consecutive year, accounting for 18 per cent of the increase. The city says the trend has continued into 2026 and could exceed last year’s volume. The city currently has 55 contracted personnel handling parking enforcement, including officers and dispatchers. The additional $1 million is expected to provide 27,000 patrol hours, add about 10 positions and generate $2 million in fine revenue. Managers are also recommending higher fines in at least 20 sections of the traffic bylaw, including raising the fine for an abandoned vehicle from $50 to $250.

Canada is retaliating with tariffs on specific U.S. goods. Here’s what it covers.

The measures include 50 per cent tariffs on many dairy products, paper products, household furniture, clothing and smartphones. A 25 per cent tariff will apply to U.S. seafood, appliances, rail equipment and trailers. Steel and aluminum products will face a 50 per cent tariff, up from the current 25 per cent rate.

The new tariffs are set to take effect Sept. 8.

Edmonton council weighs removing 14 planned bike routes

Edmonton city administrators are recommending removing 14 planned bike routes from a $100-million active transportation expansion. The city approved the four-year plan in December 2022 and has built about 35 kilometres of lanes since then. Administrators cite possible changes to the Traffic Safety Act and increasing resident complaints in recommending a modified approach.

Edmonton collector salvages rare lightning-struck concrete

An Edmonton collector salvaged a section of concrete struck by lightning in Athlone after contacting the city and a repair crew. The strike formed fulgurite, glass-like patterns created when lightning hits sand or soil. The collector said the formation is unusual because lightning is more likely to hit buildings or nearby trees than the ground.

Danielle Smith urges Ottawa to resume U.S. talks before tariffs

She said tariffs and counter-tariffs could raise costs, disrupt supply chains and put pressure on businesses and workers. Ottawa plans to impose tariffs on U.S. exports including steel, aluminum, smartphones and golf clubs. Smith has not joined other provincial and territorial leaders in supporting Prime Minister Mark Carney’s counter-tariff plan.

The counter-tariffs are scheduled to take effect Sept. 8.

Augmented-reality mural experience planned for south Chinatown

Participants will scan a QR code with their smartphones to view video and artwork overlaid on the mural, without downloading an app. The project received $140,000 from the province’s Northern and Regional Economic Development Program and was built by two students. Chinatown advocate Shawn Tse said the project aims to bring more visitors to the area’s businesses and cultural spaces.

TSB calls for stronger rail medical-fitness oversight after crash

The Transportation Safety Board is calling for stronger federal oversight of railway medical-fitness assessments after a 2023 collision near Wainwright. The TSB found a locomotive engineer was cleared to work despite incomplete assessments related to Type 1 diabetes. The engineer did not respond to a trainee’s requests for guidance because of a decline in cognitive functioning, the board said. The investigation found that Transport Canada had not audited CN’s compliance with railway medical rules in the 12 years before the crash.

Edmonton Pride organizers disclose bomb threat behind security

Edmonton Pride organizers say a bomb threat contributed to the decision to have police at Saturday’s march. The Edmonton Police Service determined the threat was not credible, according to deputy chief Nicole Chapdelaine. Organizers said the parade came close to being cancelled because of the threat but ultimately proceeded because they could not let a phone call erase queer joy. The Edmonton Pride Fest Association plans mediation discussions this fall with BIPOC and LGBTQ2S+ communities.

Alberta law scholar calls for civil deepfake-image reforms

Recent Alberta cases involving deepfake intimate images have led to charges against a Calgary teen and two Edmonton boys. The federal Criminal Code now captures deepfake non-consensual intimate images as a criminal offence. The author says Alberta’s civil legislation does not yet cover deepfake intimate images or some nearly nude images. The first part of the analysis calls for Alberta’s Legislature to expand its definition of intimate image.

LISTON: If we say no to growth, we also say no to what growth pays for

The column says the project is expected to employ more than 3,000 people during construction and about 300 once operational. It argues Alberta should assess water, electricity, land use, infrastructure and environmental concerns while considering the project’s economic return.

Trump tariffs could raise prices for phones, games and AI gear

Experts say the Canada-U.S. trade war could increase costs for cellphones, gaming consoles and artificial-intelligence infrastructure. More than $4 billion US worth of Canadian electronics exports would be subject to new U.S. tariffs. Industry representatives say tariffs will also raise the cost of homes, schools and buildings because of higher electrical-equipment prices. A University of Toronto associate professor wondered whether higher prices could ultimately slow AI adoption and deployment.

Loblaw restores country-of-origin labels after customer backlash

Loblaw says it will restore country-of-origin information on produce signs after shoppers objected to its removal. The grocer removed the information earlier this month in most provinces but continued displaying it in Ontario and Quebec because of provincial regulations. Loblaw said it will also add a “T” symbol to shelf labels for American products affected by U.S. tariffs. The company previously said sourcing can change because of seasonality, supplier changes and availability.

Alberta adds $9M for rural primary-care teams and clinics

Alberta is investing an additional $9 million in rural primary care, including nearly $8 million for clinic recruitment. The latest grant intake provided $3.4 million to 23 clinics for 53 full-time health-care positions. A further $1 million will support seven municipalities through the Municipality Supported Clinics Grant program. The funding supports staff, equipment, training and technology, and has helped some clinics expand hours and appointment capacity.

Jason Kenney urges Alberta to keep oil option in tariff fight

Former Alberta premier Jason Kenney says Canada should keep oil and gas exports available as a response to U.S. tariffs. Kenney said export taxes on fuel and potash could affect U.S. voters if the administration escalates its threats. Premier Danielle Smith has said Alberta’s oil and gas will not be part of the trade fight because cutting energy exports would hurt Canadians. Alberta NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi said Smith’s public position strengthened the U.S. bargaining position.
