Notes

WTI crude and Henry Hub natural gas on the markets board — what a barrel and a million BTU fetch, beside Alberta's own WCS and AECO.

RECORDED 2026-10-12 (DECISIONS #41): the owner accepted reading EIA directly in place of FRED, whose terms forbid storing what its API returns. Both pages are linked by EIA itself ('Spot prices' from eia.gov/petroleum/data.php; 'Natural gas spot and futures prices' from eia.gov/naturalgas/data.php). pipeline/sources/markets.py finds each row by its own history link and checks its name. OPEN, FOR THE OWNER: EIA names Refinitiv (LSEG) as the source of these prices, and EIA's reuse page excepts material licensed to it from third parties. Nothing read says whether these spot prices fall under that exception; FRED tags the same series 'Public Domain: Citation Requested'. Reading EIA rather than FRED does not change this question, it only removes FRED's. The key-free API (api.eia.gov v2) answers 403 API_KEY_MISSING; the tables need none. Values persist a week; a twice-daily build sees the same two most runs. WTI moved 85.23 to 99.37 between 2026-09-25 and 09-28 upstream (FRED identical): a real move, so the plausibility bound is wide (-100 to 500 US$/bbl; WTI settled negative in April 2020).
