WestJet flight attendants ratify three-year agreement after strike

WestJet flight attendants have ratified a new collective agreement with the airline, with 90.2 per cent voting in favour. The agreement includes a wage increase of more than 18 per cent over three years and compensation for work done on the ground. Workers will receive a 13 per cent increase in October, followed by increases of 2.75 per cent in January and 2.5 per cent at the start of 2028. The deal followed negotiations that included a one-day strike by some 4,400 cabin crew earlier this month.

EPCOR and Edmonton consider faster storm-water upgrades after floods

EPCOR and the City of Edmonton are considering accelerated work on the storm-water system after a summer of record rainfall and repeated storms. The repeated storms saturated the groundwater table, sending more runoff into a storm-water system that struggled to keep up. EPCOR said the system needs a lengthy stretch of dry weather to recover, while the storms exposed weaknesses in Edmonton’s aging network. The July storms washed away part of 137 Avenue after Horseshoe Creek overflowed and eroded the banks around its culvert. The road remains closed, limiting access to the Starling and Hawks Ridge communities. The city has spent about $350 million on flood-resiliency projects, including dry ponds and maintenance on pipes and manholes.

Health officials advise against swimming at Wizard Lake beach

Alberta Health Services is advising people not to swim or wade at Jubilee Park Beach on Wizard Lake because of elevated bacteria levels. The water can cause gastrointestinal illness if consumed, and contact with it can lead to skin, ear and eye infections. The health agency says untreated water from Wizard Lake and other bodies of water should never be used for drinking or cooking. The advisory will remain in place until further notice.

U of A opens $16.8-million First Peoples’ House facility

The University of Alberta has opened First Peoples’ House on its North Campus as a gathering and support space for Indigenous students. The 40,000-square-foot building includes spaces for Elders, smudging, cooking, mentorship, ceremony, study and healing. The facility replaces the smaller First Peoples’ House that was in the Students’ Union Building. The $16.8-million facility took three years to build.

ETS changes bus routes and school specials starting August 30

Two new school specials, Routes 615 and 623, will be added, while other routes will change, be cancelled or be combined. The On Demand Transit zone in Thorncliff will remain because of the closure of 175 Street and 87 Avenue, while Route 516 will replace stops at 17 Street and 19 Avenue.

Riders should check their routes before travelling after Aug. 30.

Sturgeon County residents question proposed AI data centre

Residents and environmental advocates gathered in St. Albert to raise concerns about a proposed AI data centre in Sturgeon County. The proposed development is described as a one-gigawatt project covering about 1,750 acres with associated gas-fired power generation. Residents called for independent oversight of the project’s water use, cooling systems, wastewater and emergency-discharge plans. Others questioned the project’s economic benefits and its potential effects on land, water and biodiversity.

Edmonton reports 10th new Dutch elm disease case this summer

Edmonton and EPCOR review flood damage after heavy rainfall

The city says its storm-water infrastructure withstood this year’s heavy rains despite dozens of flood-related closures. EPCOR said the system moved water to the river or treatment facilities as designed, although some areas experienced flooded basements and sewage backups. The city is seven years into a 20-year, $1.6-billion flood-mitigation program, and a councillor has proposed expediting it. EPCOR says repairs to the Horseshoe Creek culvert and sinkholes will cost $10 million to $15 million and will be covered within its current capital plan.

Three eastbound lanes are open, while two westbound lanes remain open between 122 Street and 142 Street. Intermittent lane closures will continue as crews complete the median barrier, paving and other finishing work.

Edmonton launches $2-million rental protection grant

A new $2-million City grant will help non-profit organizations buy and renovate low-cost market housing and keep it affordable. Rents in the homes will be capped at 80 per cent of average market rent. Eligible organizations can receive up to $20,000 per unit, to a maximum of 10 per cent of the purchase price, and up to 25 per cent of renovation costs. Pre-qualification intake is open, and applications will be accepted until all funding is allocated.

Non-profit housing organizations must pre-qualify before submitting a funding application.

City to resume EPCOR stormwater billing for community leagues

City administration will resume responsibility for managing and billing EPCOR stormwater charges for community leagues starting in 2027. The City has allocated funding to offset 100 per cent of current stormwater bills, which will continue to be distributed to leagues. One-time funding has been provided to correct billing discrepancies from 2025. Leagues will use allocated funds to cover their direct EPCOR bills until the City takes over administration.

Alberta data-centre plans face opposition at St. Albert meeting

A community meeting in St. Albert examined opposition to Meta Platforms Inc.’s planned hyperscale AI data centre in nearby Sturgeon County. The article says Alberta’s United Conservative Party has spent two years planning to attract data centres and created a concierge service for potential projects. Economist says U.S. tariffs could cost Alberta 9,000 jobs

New U.S. tariffs could lead to job losses and economic uncertainty across Alberta, experts said Monday. University of Calgary economist Trevor Tombe projected Alberta could lose as many as 9,000 jobs over the long term. Tombe said the indirect effects could spread through businesses that supply services or materials to exporters. Agriculture, plastics, electrical components and trucking are among the Alberta sectors he identified as vulnerable.

Alberta referendum questions raise concerns among migrant advocates

Five of the 10 Alberta referendum questions concern immigration, including eligibility for provincially funded programs and social supports. Question 2 would limit eligibility for programs such as health care, education and other social services to citizens, permanent residents and people with an Alberta-approved immigration status. Question 3 asks about requiring 12 months of Alberta residency for social supports, while Question 4 asks about charging a reasonable fee for education and health care.

Albertans will vote on the referendum questions Oct. 19.
