Edmonton council to consider removing 14 planned bike routes

Edmonton city administrators recommend building 13 planned bike routes while removing 14 routes from the next two years of the active transportation expansion. Council approved the $100-million network plan in December 2022, and about 35 kilometres of lanes were built in 2024 and 2025. The report cites possible changes to the provincial Traffic Safety Act and increased resident complaints as reasons for a modified approach. Most of the routes proposed for cancellation are in southeast Edmonton neighbourhoods in Ward Métis, including a planned two-way lane on 79th Street. The 79th Street lane would run from 76th Avenue to 101st Avenue, and sections of the street would no longer include parking spots if it is built. The proposal is receiving mixed reactions from residents and city councillors.

Killarney Grade 8 students to relocate during storm repairs

The move follows damage from a July 14 storm that tore off a large section of the roof and flooded several classrooms. Buses will transport students between the schools each day while repairs continue. Hardisty School is a 10-to-15-minute drive south across the river in Fulton Place.

Arbutus Landscaping fined $318,000 after worker dies in fall

An Alberta landscaping company pleaded guilty in connection with the death of a worker at an Edmonton construction site in 2023. Arbutus Landscaping pleaded guilty to failing to establish a system or process to ensure compliance with occupational health and safety laws. An Edmonton court fined the company $318,000, including the victim surcharge.

Kenilworth neighbours appeal planned three-storey infill building

Kenilworth residents are opposing plans for a three-storey building with seven units and have filed an appeal with the city. Residents say the building is too large for the area and could increase traffic and parking congestion. The city and fire department declared the property unsafe last week and ordered the owner to address the site before its demolition. The city says the demolition brought the property into compliance with the order. The site supervisor for Yash Homes said construction was being done according to permits and the law.

Edmonton adds $1M to enforce parking rules after complaints surge

Parking complaints to the City of Edmonton rose from 56,000 in 2023 to 82,000 in 2025. The increase prompted city managers to add $1 million for bylaw patrols this year. The report says the complaints created a persistent backlog of unresolved cases. Abandoned vehicles were the top parking complaint for the third consecutive year and accounted for 18 per cent of the increase. The city expects the new funding to add 27,000 patrol hours, or about 10 positions, and generate $2 million in fine revenue. Managers also recommend raising fines in at least 20 sections of the traffic bylaw. The city says the additional patrols are temporary while it develops automated parking enforcement expected to take effect by 2028.

Edmonton Pride says bomb threat led to visible police presence

A bomb threat contributed to the decision to have police at Edmonton’s Pride march on Saturday, organizers said. The Edmonton Police Service investigated the threat for several weeks and determined it was not credible. Organizers said the threat led to additional precautions, including visible security measures around the downtown route. Watson said the threat did not increase the number of officers deployed during the festivities. He apologized to people who felt unwelcome because of the security measures and communication about them.

Alberta law review calls for civil protections against deepfake abuse

An Alberta law review says the province’s intimate-image legislation should cover deepfake non-consensual intimate images and nearly nude images. The review cites Alberta cases in which Calgary and Edmonton youth were charged after creating or sharing deepfake images of classmates. The Alberta government announced plans in March to amend the legislation to include deepfake images in its civil cause of action. The review recommends defining intimate images as personal or fake intimate images and including nearly nude images under both definitions.

Study finds screen-time type matters for young children

Entertainment-based screen time was the most common and was labelled lower quality because it was mentally passive and gave children few opportunities to respond verbally or find objects. Interactive apps, video calls with family members and electronic games were identified as potentially higher-quality forms of screen time. Carson said moderation remains the main message because screen time replaces other activities that support development.

LISTON: If we say no to growth, we also say no to what growth pays for

Meta is proposing a more than $13-billion artificial-intelligence data centre in Sturgeon County that is expected to employ more than 3,000 people during construction and about 300 once operational. The province estimates the project could generate about $250 million annually in royalties, taxes, levies and fees. The commentary says Alberta should examine water, electricity, land use, infrastructure and environmental concerns before deciding whether to approve the project. It argues that the project should be assessed on whether it can be done responsibly and provide a fair return for Albertans.

Ottawa sets tariffs on $27.6B in U.S. goods, aid package

The counter-tariffs will apply to American steel, dairy products, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper and electronics. Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne also announced a $7.5-billion package for Canadian workers and businesses affected by the trade war. TSB urges rail medical oversight after Wainwright collision

A Transportation Safety Board investigation found a CN locomotive engineer was cleared for duty despite incomplete medical assessments. Investigators said the engineer experienced a significant decline in cognitive functioning that impaired his ability to control the train and supervise the trainee. The TSB found the engineer had type 1 diabetes and that several mandatory annual assessments were incomplete or had not been conducted. Transport Canada had not audited CN’s compliance with railway medical rules in the 12 years before the collision.

Tariffs could raise costs for AI hardware, phones and games

Experts say the Canada-U.S. trade war could increase costs for cellphones, gaming consoles and artificial-intelligence infrastructure. More than $4 billion US worth of Canadian electronics exports to the United States were expected to face new 50 per cent tariffs. An industry representative said higher prices would increase the cost of homes, schools and buildings. A University of Toronto professor said the higher costs could slow the adoption and deployment of artificial intelligence.

A further $1 million was awarded to seven municipalities through the Municipality Supported Clinics Grant program.

U.S. tariffs leave Alberta honey producers facing lost market

Owner Kevin Nixon said the tariffs leave producers without enough margin to absorb the cost. Canada exported 56 per cent of its honey by volume to the United States last year, according to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.

Kenney urges Alberta to consider energy export tax in trade war

Former Alberta premier Jason Kenney says the province should consider export taxes on energy resources to pressure U.S. President Donald Trump. Kenney said he does not support restricting energy exports but that a modest tax could remind the U.S. administration that its actions are counterproductive. More than two-thirds of Alberta’s oil is piped to the United States, which Kenney said gives the province economic leverage.

Notley and Kenney co-chair campaign for Alberta to stay in Canada

Former Alberta premiers Jason Kenney and Rachel Notley will co-chair a Canadian Chamber of Commerce campaign supporting Alberta remaining in Canada. The campaign will make the economic case for Alberta remaining in Canada and advance practical solutions to the province’s challenges. The chamber says it will consult business leaders, community organizations and individuals across Canada about Alberta’s place in Confederation.

Alberta backs grizzly monitoring but not a population count

The Alberta government is supporting grizzly bear monitoring research but is not conducting a provincewide population count. The fRI Research project collects and analyzes grizzly bear hair samples in west-central Alberta sub-populations to study survival and possible range expansion. No provincial grizzly bear population study has been done since 2018, and researchers say estimates after that are based mostly on anecdotal information. The province says the population rose from approximately 700 in 2010 to about 1,000 today.

Smith faces pressure to join premiers’ Team Canada tariff approach

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has taken a different position from most premiers on Canada’s response to new U.S. tariffs. Smith said she was concerned about the effects of a trade war on Alberta farmers, furniture makers and apiarists, and urged negotiators to return to talks. Ontario Premier Doug Ford said Canada needs a Team Canada approach and should be able to use counter-tariffs on oil, gas and potash exports if tariffs escalate. Smith said cutting energy exports to the U.S. would be extremely harmful to Canadians and was not a viable option.
